Summary

This photograph of a herostone (virgal) containing old Kannada inscription was taken by me at the Kaitabhesvara (also spelt Kaitabheshvara or Kaitabheshwara) temple in Kubatur (also spelt Kubattur or called Kotipura) in the Shivamogga district (Shimoga), Karnataka state, India. The temple was built around 1100 AD during the reign of Hoysala King Vinayaditya, a feudatory of the Western Chalukya emperor Vikramaditya VI. The architectural style is very Chalukyan. The hero stone has a old Kannada inscription dated 1235 A.D. and is from the rule of Yadava King Singhana Deva.Souce:Epigraphia Carnatica, Inscriptions in Shimoga, Mysore Archaeological Survey, Volume 8, Part 2, by Benjamin Lewis Rice, Mysore Government Central Press, 1904. chapter:List of Inscriptions by Chronological Order, pg.5; Translations, Sorab Taluq, pg. 44; Text of Inscriptions in Roman Characters, pg.90
