Summary
High magnification <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/micrograph" class="extiw" title="w:micrograph">micrograph</a> of crypt branching in a case of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crohn%27s_disease" class="extiw" title="w:Crohn's disease">Crohn's disease</a> with active inflammation. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%26E_stain" class="extiw" title="w:H&E stain">H&E stain</a>. Colonic biopsy of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mucosa" class="extiw" title="w:mucosa">mucosa</a>.
The micrograph show numerous eosinophils. This suggest an infectious cause and/or inflammatory cause.

Crypt branching is a sign of a chronic crypt destructive process. Causes of chronic crypt destruction that lead to crypt branching include:
- <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/inflammatory_bowel_disease" class="extiw" title="w:inflammatory bowel disease">Inflammatory bowel disease</a> (e.g. ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease),
- Persistent infectious colitides, and
- <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ischemic_colitis" class="extiw" title="w:ischemic colitis">Ischemic colitis</a>.
