Summary

View at head of Liddesdale from Waverley Route train approaching Riccarton Junction.
View NW, to Arnton Fell (1,329 ft.) and Blackwood Hill (1,463 ft.). We were about three miles from the summit of the 10-mile climb to Whitrope from Newcastleton on the ex-North British main line Carlisle - Edinburgh, which was savagely closed in January 1969 - cutting off most of the Borders Region from rail access. The train was a Rail Tour, headed by a couple of LNER B1 4-6-0s.
