We were about three miles from the summit of the 10-mile climb to Whitrope from Newcastleton on the ex-North British main line Carlisle - Edinburgh, which was savagely closed in January 1969 - cutting off most of the Borders Region from rail access. The train was a Rail Tour, headed by a couple of LNER B1 4-6-0s.
