A school (from Greek σχολεῖον - scholeion) is an institution designed to allow and encourage students (or "pupils") to learn, under the supervision of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students often progress through a series of schools: primary school, secondary school, and possibly a university, vocational school or a college. There are also non-governmental schools, called private or independent schools. A school may be dedicated to a particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools and democratic education may provide nontraditional methods and curriculum, or no curriculum, as it were. In homeschooling and online schools, teaching and learning take place outside of a traditional school building. The use of the term school varies by country, as do the names of the various levels of education within the country. More about Schools... Amador Valley is one of four high schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District, which includes Foothill High School, Village High School, and Horizon High School. The school was founded as Amador Valley Joint Union High School, from which its first class graduated in 1923. The school has been named a California Distinguished School, a National School of Character, and a National Blue Ribbon School. As of 2009, Amador Valley offers its 2,500 students 23 varsity sports, 20 Advanced Placement courses, a program to study local aquatic wildlife, and vocational training. Amador's location allows it to be the launching point for parades and to host the site of the Amador Theater, Pleasanton's central performing arts facility for more than 60 years. In national competitions such as We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, the Amador Valley team has ranked in the top four places from 2006 to 2009. Similarly, the Amador Valley Robotics Team is recognized nationally as the only high school team in the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) competition hosted by Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI). The Boston Latin School is a public exam school founded on April 23, 1635, in Boston, Massachusetts, making it the oldest public school in the United States. The Public Latin School was a bastion for educating the sons of the Boston elite, resulting in the school claiming many prominent Bostonians as alumni. It has produced four Harvard presidents, four Massachusetts governors, and five signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. His life work was the founding of the "Society for the Furtherance of Child Emigration to the Colonies", which was afterwards incorporated as the "Child Emigration Society" and ultimately the "Fairbridge Society". At the time of his death, 200 children were attending his school near Pinjarra, Western Australia.
