The 2014 Victorian Football League season is the 133rd season of the Victorian Football Association/Victorian Football League Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Footscray Bulldogs, the reserves team of the Australian Football League's Western Bulldogs which was competing in its first season in the VFL, after it defeated and upset Box Hill by 22 points in the Grand Final on 21 September; it was the first senior VFL premiership won by the Footscray reserves team, and it was the tenth senior VFA/VFL premiership won by the Footscray/Western Bulldogs Football Club overall.

Association membership

The Association increased from fourteen teams to sixteen teams in 2014, following the end of two VFL-AFL affiliations:

  • AFL club Richmond and VFL club Coburg ended their alignment, which had been in place since 2001. Richmond re-entered a stand-alone reserves team in the VFL, having previously fielded one in the 2000 season. Coburg continued as a stand-alone VFL club, and returned to using 'the Lions' as its mascot, having been known by Richmond's nickname of 'the Tigers' during the affiliation.[1]
  • AFL club Western Bulldogs and VFL club Williamstown ended their alignment. The Bulldogs entered its stand-alone reserves team in the VFL for the first time, playing under the club's traditional name of Footscray. Williamstown continued as a stand-alone VFL club.[2][3]

The Development League was reduced from ten teams to nine, with North Ballarat withdrawing its team;[4] this left only the nine metropolitan VFL clubs competing in the seconds competition, with all five AFL clubs and both regional VFL clubs (North Ballarat and Bendigo) absent.

Grand Final

Background

At the conclusion of the regular home-and-away season, Footscray had finished second on the ladder with 14 wins and 4 losses. Box Hill just finished under top 3 by finishing fourth with 13 wins, 4 losses and a draw against Sandringham.

Box Hill went into the Grand Final as good favourites. Even though Footscray finished in the top 2 of the ladder, they had lost twice to Box Hill during the regular season, and Box Hill thrashed the premiership favourites Port Melbourne in the first qualifing Final by 4 goals. Box Hill later on claimed as hot favouritism after the Port Melbourne game.

Footscray entered the competition this year rejoining after they left in 1924. They had never beaten Box Hill before. And said that they would have a chance to bring back glory.

Match Summary

After a 3rd quarter time. Box Hill kicked 3 goals ahead of Footscray and brought hopes up thinking they have done it and winning the premiership back to back, But then injuries that took there toll. Footscray came back kicking six goals and led by 3 goals at the end that made it one of the best Grand final come backs in history (same with the 1990 and 1994 grand finals). Footscray claim there first premiership title to upset the Hawks, with a 22 point lead victory.

Brett Goodes was awarded the Norm Goss Memorial Medal for best on ground.

  • Footscray's appearance (as a reserves team) marked the first time a VFA/VFL team reached or won a Grand Final in its inaugural season.[10]
  • The attendance of 23,816 was the biggest Grand Final attendance in the VFA/VFL in 25 years[11]
  • Hawthorn AFL-listed player Cyril Rioli played his first ever game for Box Hill in the Grand Final; Rioli was returning after missing three months of football with a hamstring injury, and was attempting to prove form and fitness to play in the following week's AFL Grand Final.[10]

The two highest ranked non-AFL exclusive teams from the 2013 season (premiers Box Hill and third placed Williamstown) were invited to compete in the Foxtel Cup knockout competition for 2014. Box Hill was eliminated in the first round of the tournament, and Williamstown recorded comfortable victories in all three fixtures, earning a second Foxtel Cup title in club history.
