The men's 100 metres at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Beijing National Stadium on 22 and 23 August.[1][2]
Going into the championship as the world leader, many tipped Justin Gatlin to beat world record holder Usain Bolt. Gatlin ran a wind aided 9.83 in the heats and 9.77 in the semi-final. Bolt was less dominant, with a pair of 9.96's which were similar to the other finalists Andre De Grasse, who matched him in his semi-final, veteran rivals Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell, and barely ahead of time qualifiers Trayvon Bromell, Jimmy Vicaut and Su Bingtian. Vicaut and Bingtian made it a 9 lane final by an exact tie for the final qualifying position at 9.986. Mike Rodgers was the clear second best in the semi-finals with a 9.86 behind Gatlin.
In the final, Bolt and Gatlin got off to strong starts, and were even for most of the race. Gatlin tied up over the last 20 metres, and Bolt took the win by a hundredth of a second, with Gatlin in second.[3] In a rare tie for third, De Grasse and Bromell both finished with a time of 9.911, measured to the thousandth of a second.[4]
