Format changes

In July 2015, FIBA tried to take the helm of the Euroleague by trying to convince eight of the eleven teams with an A-Licence to play a new competition organized by them instead of the current Euroleague.[1] This proposal was unanimously rejected by the Euroleague clubs.[2]

In November 2015, Euroleague Basketball agreed a 10-year joint venture with IMG.[3] In its press release, the Euroleague announced a new competition format for the 2016–17 season, with only 16 teams including the eleven A-license clubs (Anadolu Efes, Baskonia, CSKA Moscow, FC Barcelona, Fenerbahçe, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Milan, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Real Madrid and Žalgiris) playing in an only group with a double round-robin. The eight first qualified teams will play the best-of-five playoffs for qualifying to the Final Four.

After its first proposal was rejected by the Euroleague clubs, FIBA prepared the Basketball Champions League, a new competition with a qualification based in sporting merit.[4] This competition was officially launched on 21 March 2016.[5]

Teams

The competition will be joined by the 11 teams with a permanent franchise, three domestic league champions, the Eurocup champion and wild card invitation.[3][6][7]
