ARD-alpha is a German television station owned by regional broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR)

ARD-alpha broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with programmes from BR, as well as from ARD and Austrian broadcaster ORF. Until 29 June 2014 the channel was named BR-alpha.

Programmes

ARD-alpha broadcasts educational programmes including; science, religion, music, philosophy, literature, art and culture.

History

BR-alpha (1998-2014)

The educational television channel BR-alpha started as a 24-hour offer on January 7, 1998. Programs of the station were originally aired via Astra and other cable networks in analog. Programs focused mainly on the areas of educations, information and service. In the summer of 1998, digital broadcasting of their programs began via Astra.[1] On 28 November 2000, the intendants of the regional public broadcasting agencies signed an agreement for cooperation with the Bayerischer Rundfunk-education channel BR-alpha.[2]

On 30 September 2002, there was the launch of Planet Wissen (Planet Knowledge), a common knowledge program of BR-alpha, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and Südwestrundfunk, which also has an extensive internet offer. With the start of the digital terrestrial television in Bavaria on 30 May 2005, BR-alpha began broadcasting through DVB-T.[3]

In time for the 10th anniversary on 16 February 2008, a revision of the programming offers was made. In addition to the programs relating to vocational counseling, the youth magazine freiraum (free space) was started and the programs W wie Wissen (K like Knowledge) and Faszination Wissen were taken over.[4]

On 9 August 2009, the youth program on3-südwild changed over from Bavarian Television to BR-alpha.[5] On 27 June 2010, Andreas Höfer received the Deutschen Kamerapreis (German Camera Award) in the category TV movie /docudrama for the BR-alpha film Empathie – Stumme Schreie (Empathy - Silent screams).[6]

ARD-alpha (since 2014)

BR-alpha was renamed on 29 June 2014 to ARD-alpha. A programing conversion had already took place on 28 June 2014. The financing and the broadcasting legal responsibilities for the station still belong to BR. At the same time programs were taken over from other ARD senders for ARD-alpha.[7][8] The cooperation with the Austrian ORF (alpha-Austria) was pushed forth and its television programs are now aired after 10 pm instead of early evening. According to the internet magazine DWDL.de, there are still lots of considerations to ensure the survival ARD-alpha.[7] Werner Reuss is head of ARD-alpha.

Reception

ARD-alpha is available in Bavaria (and in neighbouring states), via digital terrestrial (DVB-T) and throughout Germany via cable, and throughout Europe by satellite on Astra 1M (digital, DVB-S). On 30 April 2012, all German analogue satellite transmission, including that of ARD-alpha, ceased.[9]
