Early life
Coote was born in Bedford, England, but grew up in Scotland. He lived in Newport-on-Tay, Fife, and played youth football for Tayport Thistle before joining the Dundee United Academy based at St John's Roman Catholic High School in Dundee.[1] His performances at youth level saw him named by stv.tv as one of their "Fourteen for '14" and described as "the next big thing to break through at Tannadice".[2]
Playing career
Club
Coote signed his first professional contract with Dundee United in June 2014.[1] He made his competitive first team debut aged 16 as a substitute against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on 18 April 2015.[3]
On 22 January 2016, Coote joined Scottish League Two side East Fife on loan until June 2016.[4] He made his debut for East Fife the following day, scoring the third goal in a 3–1 win over East Stirlingshire.[5] After returning from loan in May 2016 following the end of the League Two season, Coote appeared as a substitute in Dundee United's 3–2 win away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle. With league rules stating that a player returning from loan after 31 March is not eligible to play for his parent club during the same season, the rule breach led to the club being deducted three points and fined £30,000.[6]
International
Coote made his international debut for Scotland under-15s against Italy in March 2012, going on to make eight appearances at that level.[7] He made five appearances for the under-16 team, scoring twice in a 3–0 win over Northern Ireland in the Victory Shield.[8] In 2014, Coote played three times for Scotland under-17s.[9] After being initially selected for the 2015 European Under-17 Championship finals, Coote was one of "three to watch" picked out from the squad by the Scottish Football Association website,[10] only for him to be withdrawn from the tournament at the request of Dundee United.[11]
