Carla Borrego (née Williams; born 11 November 1983) is a Jamaican-Australian international basketball and netball player.

Career

Early career

Borrego grew up playing netball in Jamaica, but gave up the sport for a time to play women's basketball, first at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale before gaining a scholarship to the University of Miami.[1]

Before her move to the United States in 2004, Borrego was a member of the Jamaican national netball team at the 2003 World Netball Championships in Kingston, where she was the second most prolific shooter of the tournament.[2][3] Her studies in the United States prevented her from playing for Jamaica in the 2007 World Netball Championships,[4] but she played domestic netball for the Waulgrovians.[5] In 2010, Borrego made herself available for selection in the Jamaican national team[6] but later withdrew.[7]

Australian career

Borrego currently plays for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Australasian ANZ Championship.[8]

In 2011, in the fifth round against the Queensland Firebirds, Borrego played at the Goal Keeper position for the very first time. She played at that position again in round 11 against the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic. After the ANZ Championship, Borrego was invited to the Australian National Netball Team's selection camp as a training partner, but was ineligible to be in the Diamond's squad. As a result, Borrego did not compete in the 2011 World Netball Championship for Australia.

In 2015, Borrego became an Australian citizenship, making her eligible for future selection to the Australian national team.[9][10]
