Egbert Jaeckel (16 October 1919 – 17 July 1943) was a highly decorated Hauptmann in the Luftwaffe during World War II and a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. During his career he flew 983 missions and was also credited with the sinking of the Soviet destroyer Minsk.[Notes 1] Egbert Jaeckel was shot down and killed on 17 July 1943 during the Battle of Kursk by Soviet fighters. He was posthumously promoted to Hauptmann.
