The only species that has been formally assigned to the genus is Frankixalus jerdonii, which until 2016 had been placed in the genus Philautus.[3][2] However, DNA studies have revealed a second, as yet unnamed, species, which has a range including Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet.[3][2]
The name of the genus honours fr from the Free University of Brussels.[4]
Frankixalus jerdonii is endemic to northeastern India where it is known from West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh.
