Development

The development dates back to 2014, where the film was announced by cinematographer-turned-director S. Krishna soon after the success of his first directorial venture, Gajakesari. However, due to the non-availability of actor Sudeep's dates, it got pushed for two years. Finishing all his prior commitments, Sudeep gave a bulk five months date for the film and the director commenced the shooting in mid April 2016. It was reported that Sudeep would play the character of an Army officer and his looks needed to be matched.

Casting

After having roped in Sudeep to play the protagonist, director cast P. Ravi Shankar to play a negative role opposite Sudeep. Since the plot required a parallel male lead to play the brother role to Sudeep, director approached actor V. Ravichandran to play the character and finalized him. Actress Amala Paul who was on the lookout for a fresh script in Kannada was signed on to play the female lead role. For the other antagonist roles, Sampath Raj, Kabir Duhan Singh and finally Ravi Kishan were selected.[4]
