James Alexander "Jimmy" Stevens was a college football coach in the United States. His career coaching record was 36 wins, 22 losses, and 1 tie. He coached at Prairie View A&M University, where he was credited for building the program's "dynasty" it's "glory years." [1] He later went on to coach at North Carolina Central University.

He was married to Jocelyn Cain (died 1980) and had two sons, James and Robert.[2][3]

Coaching career

Prairie View A&M

Stevens was the seventh head coach for the Prairie View A&M University Panthers located in Prairie View, Texas and he held that position for three seasons, from 1949 until 1951. His coaching record at Prairie View was 25 wins, 7 losses, and 0 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him fourth at Prairie View in total wins and first at Prairie View in winning percentage (.781).[4][5]

North Carolina Central

In 1965, Stevens was named the tenth head coach for the North Carolina Central University Eagles located in Durham, North Carolina and he held that position for three seasons, from 1965 until 1967. His coaching record at North Carolina Central was 11 wins, 15 losses, and 1 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him tenth at North Carolina Central in total wins and 13th at North Carolina Central in winning percentage (.426). [6]
