Jeffrey Donald Palmer is a Distinguished Professor of Biology at Indiana University Bloomington.[1][4]
Education
Palmer was educated at Swarthmore College and completed his PhD at Stanford University on the evolution of chloroplast DNA supervised by Winslow Briggs in 1982.[2][7]
Career and research
Palmer's research investigates molecular evolution,[1] molecular phylogenetics[1] and comparative genomics.[1][8] As of 2018[update] his laboratory studies the evolution of genes and genomes particularly in the chloroplast, mitochondrial DNA[9] and during horizontal gene transfer.[10][11][12]
His former doctoral students include Thomas D. Bruns,[13] a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley.[14] His former postdocs include Patrick J. Keeling,[2][10] and Kenneth H. Wolfe,[3] and Mark Wayne Chase.[4][5]
Awards and honours
Palmer was awarded membership of the National Academy of Sciences in 2000[15] in recognition of his “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research”[16] and the McClintock Prize in 2016 for his studies of plant genome structure, function and evolution.[6] He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (FAAAS) in 1999.[17]
