John Pickering (linguist)

John Pickering (7 February 1777 – 5 May 1846) was an American linguist. He was president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, from 1839 to 1846.[1] He was elected to the American Philosophical Society.

He graduated from Harvard University.[2][3] He worked on the orthography of native languages.[4]

He is buried at Broad Street Cemetery.[5]

His father was Timothy Pickering.[1]
