Playing career
Paulo was born in Auckland and attended Patrician Brothers' College Blacktown. He is of American Samoan and Niuean descent, and so is eligible for both Samoa and the USA at international level.[3] He is also an Australian Schoolboys international.[4]
2008
In Round 6 against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Paulo made his NRL debut for the Penrith Panthers, starting at second-row in the 21-20 golden point extra time win at Remondis Stadium.[5][6] Paulo would go on to play in 8 matches in his debut year, but also played for the Panthers NYC team.
Paulo was named in the Samoan squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.[7][8]
2009
In Round 17 against the Parramatta Eels, Paulo scored his first NRL career try in the Panthers 38-34 win at Penrith Stadium.[9] Paulo finished the season with him playing in 14 matches and scoring 2 tries. He was named as part of the Samoan side for the Pacific Cup.[10] Paulo played at lock in Samoa’s shock 22-20 defeat to the Cook Islands at Barlow Park.[11]
2010
Paulo finished the 2010 NRL season with him playing in 7 matches for the Panthers. Paulo again represented Samoa, playing at five-eighth and kicking 1 goal in Samoa’s 50-6 loss against New Zealand at Mt Smart Stadium.[12]
2011
Paulo only played in 1 match for the Panthers in Round 15 against the Newcastle Knights before signing and making a mid-year transfer move to the Parramatta Eels after languishing in the New South Wales Cup playing for the Windsor Wolves.[13] In Round 20 against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Paulo would go on to make his club debut for the Parramatta Eels off the interchange bench in the 8-7 loss at ANZ Stadium.[14] This was Paulo’s only match for the Eels in the 2011, spending the rest of the year playing for the Wentworthville Magpies in the New South Wales Cup.
At the end of the season, Paulo switched his international allegiance to the United States of America. Paulo played at five-eighth and lock for the Tomahawks in their 2011 World Cup qualifier matches against South Africa and Jamaica, kicking 10 goals in both wins.[15][16][17]
2012
On 16 June 2012, Paulo re-signed with the Eels, keeping him the club to the end of the 2014 season.[18] Paulo finished the season with him playing a full season of first grade, playing in 23 matches for the Eels in the 2012 NRL season.
2013
In Round 9 against the Brisbane Broncos, Paulo scored his first club try for the Eels in the 19-18 win at Parramatta Stadium.[19] Paulo finished the 2013 NRL season with him playing in all of the Eels 24 matches, scoring 1 try and kicking 6 goals. Paulo captained the United States national rugby league team in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, playing at five-eighth, scoring 2 tries and kicking 6 goals in their surprising campaign, reaching up to the quarter finals which were later ended in a 62-0 shellacking loss to World Cup winners Australia at Racecourse Ground in Wrexham.[20][21][22]
2014
In Round 24 against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, Paulo played his 100th NRL career match in the Eels 22-12 win at Parramatta Stadium.[23] Paulo finished the 2015 NRL season with him playing in all of the Eels 24 matches, scoring 1 try and kicking 3 goals. On 30 October 2014, Paulo extended his contract with the Eels to the end of the 2016 season after rejecting offers from the Canberra Raiders.[24]
2015
On 13 February, Paulo was selected on the interchange bench for NRL All Stars to play against the Indigenous All Stars in the 2015 Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars match at Cbus Super Stadium.[25] The NRL All Stars later lost 20-6.[26] On 3 May 2015, Paulo played for New South Wales City Origin against New South Wales Country Origin off the interchange bench in the 34-22 loss at Wagga Wagga.[27][28] After the City vs. Country clash, Paulo was axed to the Eels New South Wales Cup team the Wentworthville Magpies due to bad form and struggled for consistency ever since.[29] Paulo finished the 2015 NRL season with playing 14 matches for the Eels.
On 2 November, Paulo was released from the final year of his Eels contract to sign a two-year contract with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks starting in 2016.[30][31]
