KFXX (1080 AM, "1080 The FAN") is a class B clear channel AM radio station broadcasting from Portland, Oregon, United States; the dominant Class A stations on 1080 AM are WTIC, Hartford, Connecticut, KRLD, Dallas, Texas and KOAN, Anchorage, Alaska. As of 2006 it is owned by Entercom Portland LLC and runs sports radio programming.[1] The studios are located south of downtown Portland, and the transmitter site is in the Northeast side along the Columbia River.
KFXX carries Colin Cowherd from Fox Sports Radio. However, KFXX lost the carriage rights to The Jim Rome Show (now carried on KXTG "750 The Game") and also lost Dan Patrick. Patrick moved to the KXTG lineup with his new syndicated show. [2]
KFXX, airs two live local shows: "Primetime with Isaac Ropp and Jason 'Big Suke' Scukanec" on weekday afternoons from 3pm-7pm. The first three hours of "Primetime" are simulcast on Comcast SportsNet Northwest. On June 4, 2012, KFXX added "Travis & Wilcox" with former Oregon Ducks Tight End Josh Wilcox, and radio personality Travis Demers. The show airs weekdays Noon-3pm.
History
This station was first licensed as KFWV, which began operations on October 12, 1925. In 1927 the call sign was changed to KWJJ, incorporating the initials of the station's founder, Wilbur J. Jerman. KWJJ became Portland's ABC affiliate in 1959 and adopted a country music format on March 1, 1965.[3]
KWJJ-AM dropped its simulcast of KWJJ-FM in 1995 for ABC Real Country..[4]
The call sign was changed to KOTK in 1997, with a format change to "hot talk".
The KFXX call letters were first used in the Portland market on "The X," a hard rock station on 1520 AM. KFXX flipped to its current sports format in 1990.[5] KFXX moved to AM 910 on March 29, 1998, then swapped frequencies with KOTK on March 19, 2004.[6]
In its early days, one of its hosts was Neil Lomax, a former quarterback at Portland State University and the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals.
