METRORail is a light rail transit system serving Houston, Texas. The system is operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas, also known as METRO.[1] Serving 39,300 passengers a day, METRORail is one of the largest light rail systems in the United States in terms of ridership.[2]

METRORail began operations on January 1, 2004.[3] The system currently has 37 stations, served by the Red Line, Green Line, and Purple Line. 16 of the stations were part of the original system, and 8 more stations were added in December 2013 as part of the North/Red Line Extension. All 24 stations are within Houston, Harris County, Texas. A 17th station, tentatively named Central Station, was added to the Red Line upon completion of the construction of the Southeast/Purple Line and East End/Green Line.[4] 13 stations were opened as part of the Purple Line and Green Line on May 23, 2015, and an additional two stations are under construction to extend the Green Line.[5]
