Saturday Night Live (SNL) is a late-night sketch comedy and variety show created by Lorne Michaels. It premiered on the NBC Television Network on October 11, 1975, under the title NBC's Saturday Night. The show often satirizes contemporary American popular culture and politics. Saturday Night Live features a two-tiered cast: the repertory members, also known as the "Not Ready for Prime-Time Players," and newer cast members, known as "Featured Players." Each week, the show features a host, often a well-known celebrity, who delivers an opening monologue and performs in sketches with the cast. A musical guest is also invited to perform several sets (usually two, occasionally more). Every so often a host or musical guest fills both roles. With the exception of season 7 and several other rare cases, the show begins with a cold open that ends with someone breaking character and proclaiming "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!"

Saturday Night Live is one of the longest-running network programs in American television history, with more than 900 episodes broadcast over five decades. A number of the show's sketches have been developed into feature films, including The Blues Brothers, Wayne's World, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, Coneheads, The Ladies Man and MacGruber.

Seasons 1 through 5 are available on DVD in Region 1. Various Saturday Night Live sketches are available in several new media formats, including streaming on Hulu and Netflix. A number of sketches are available to view via the show's official YouTube channel, along with best-of compilations for sale through digital video retailers. As of October 1, 2020, the full catalogue of Saturday Night Live episodes is available on the streaming service Peacock, updated actively as new episodes release.

  • Queen Latifah appeared as Gwen Ifill and Tina Fey returned as Sarah Palin in a parody of the Vice Presidential Debate, with Jason Sudeikis as Joe Biden in the cold open.
  • An edited version of the sketch parodying the economic bailout was posted on NBC.com, removing references to Herbert and Marion Sandler's (played by Darrell Hammond and Casey Wilson, respectively) corrupt activities and removing the graphic labeling the couple as "people who should be shot." Lorne Michaels admitted he did not know the Sandlers were a real couple; he believed they were simply characters written for the sketch.[9] The Netflix version (and versions of this sketch shown on Hulu and Saturday Night Live's mobile app) of this episode includes the scene with the Sandlers, but edited it to remove the "People Who Should Be Shot" lower-third and cut the part where Herbert Sandler thanks Barney Frank for letting them get away with what they did to Wachovia Bank.

  • Maya Rudolph appears as Michelle Obama in the Obama Variety Hour sketch, and performs a brief cover of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", replacing "I love you, baby" with "we love you, Amy", with Kenan Thompson at the end of Update, wishing Poehler the best during her maternity leave.

831 2 Gal Gadot Sam Smith October 7, 2017 (2017-10-07) 4.4[205]
  • Sam Smith performs "Too Good at Goodbyes" and "Pray".
  • Jason Aldean performs "I Won't Back Down" in the cold open as a tribute to the victims of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting and to Tom Petty, who died earlier in the week.
  • As mentioned by Gadot during the monologue, this was the first episode to be broadcast live in Israel; until this night, it took a week for episodes aired in the US to appear on Israeli TV. During the monologue, Gadot speaks a few sentences in Hebrew for the Israeli audience. The Hebrew sentences are subtitled in English.
  • The "Safelite AutoGlass" sketch was subsequently pulled from rebroadcasts and the Internet after Safelite complained on Twitter that the sketch was offensive (and the humor in it would be considered in bad taste due to the influx of news at the time about male celebrities being outed as sexual offenders). Rebroadcasts of the show replaced the segment with a previously unaired, but released to the Internet, music video sketch called "The Last Fry".[206][207] As of 2019, Hulu has the original Safelite sketch and "The Last Fry" is no longer shown.
  • When the episode was rerun on August 18, 2018, a photograph of Aretha Franklin, who had died two days earlier, was shown in silence before the goodnights.
832 3 Kumail Nanjiani P!nk October 14, 2017 (2017-10-14) 4.6/11[208]

  • Taylor Swift performs "... Ready for It?" and an acoustic version of "Call It What You Want."
  • Larry David and Jason Sudeikis appear as Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden, respectively, in the "DNC Commercial" sketch. David, while in character, references the controversy that his monologue from the previous week generated, saying that any guy who makes jokes about concentration camps (himself) "should rot in hell".
  • A photo of SNL sound man George Corrado is shown in silence before the goodnights.
  • Haddish won an Emmy in 2018 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for hosting.[211]
835 6 Chance the Rapper Eminem November 18, 2017 (2017-11-18) 4.3/10[213]

  • Fred Armisen and Bill Murray appear as Michael Wolff and Steve Bannon, respectively, in the cold open.
  • Stanley Tucci appears in the pre-recorded "Tucci Gang" sketch.[218]
  • Rockwell accidentally said "fucking" during the Science Room with Mr. Science sketch (when he tells the kid assistants played by Mikey Day and Cecily Strong "You can't be this fucking stupid"). During Weekend Update, both Colin Jost and Michael Che said "shithole" while discussing a comment President Trump made using that word and how NBC wanted them to tone it down, but openly defied it. All instances were censored for the West Coast feed, which is delayed by a few seconds. While the program airs during the safe harbor period in the Eastern and Central time zones, SNL has aired live coast to coast since the spring of 2017, meaning that in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, Rockwell's comment would have been heard between 9:30 and 10:00 PM or 8:30 and 9:00 PM, respectively, potentially subjecting network affiliates in those regions to FCC fines for indecency if it had not been censored.[219]

Saturday Night Live at Home

<templatestyles src="Module:Hatnote/styles.css"></templatestyles>

On March 16, 2020 it was announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the episodes that were to air March 28, April 4, and April 11 were cancelled,[281] with reruns shown in place of the first two. John Krasinski and Dua Lipa had previously been announced as host and musical guest for the cancelled March 28 episode. It would have been Krasinski's first time hosting the show and Lipa's second time appearing as musical guest. Both Krasinski and Lipa's appearances were eventually rescheduled in the following season. During the 46th season, Lipa appeared as musical guest in episode 9, and Krasinski hosted the show in episode 10.

During an episode of The Strokes' radio series with guest Colin Jost, it was revealed that the band was scheduled to perform on the April 11 episode, in promotion of their new album The New Abnormal. It would have been The Strokes' fourth appearance as musical guest and first time appearing on the show since 2011.[282] The band eventually had their fourth musical guest appearance during the October 31, 2020 episode of the 46th season. During her monologue on the October 17, 2020 episode, Issa Rae suggested that her hosting of the show had been preempted by the COVID shutdown, saying that she was supposed to have hosted the show "back in March".[283]

The show resumed production on April 11 in a new format, with cast members remotely appearing from their homes via video conferencing. The new format for the show became known as "Saturday Night Live at Home".[284]

  • Kacey Musgraves performs "Justified" and "Camera Roll".

It was the first time in the history of the show that a musical guest performed nude on stage in front of the audience. The nudity was inspired by a scene in Forrest Gump in which Robin Wright's character performs in the nude. Musgraves' nudity was only confirmed two days after the episode aired. Her publicist said that "precautions" were taken to keep her covered from the studio audience before and after the performance.[318]

  2. In an interview two weeks prior to the show, Dr. Fauci jokingly agreed with the interviewer that Pitt would be a good choice for portraying him.[286]
  3. Pitt briefly breaks character to thank the real Dr. Fauci and the health care professionals who have been working the front line in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.
For the conclusion of the cold open, instead of delivering the typical "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" line, Pitt delivers it as "Live, kind of, from all across America, it's Saturday Night".
  4. While some sources independent to the show have listed Brad Pitt as the host for this episode, the show did not officially announce a host during the opening sequence. On its website, the show lists "The cast of SNL" in the title that is normally reserved for the host.[287]
  5. Morgan Wallen's scheduled appearance as the musical guest was cancelled the week of the episode after videos surfaced showing him violating the show's COVID-19 protocols on mask wearing and social distancing.[293] White was announced as a replacement the day before the broadcast.[294] Wallen was later rescheduled for the December 5 episode.
  6. The episode was broadcast as planned in spite of an employee at 30 Rockefeller Plaza having tested positive for COVID-19 on air day.[295]
  7. Chappelle is hosting the first episode immediately following the presidential election. He also hosted the first episode immediately following the 2016 presidential election.
  8. The episode was delayed due to a Clemson vs. Notre Dame college football game that went into double overtime.
  9. Sheeran performed despite having tested positive for COVID-19 thirteen days prior to show date. His performance was confirmed four days prior to show date after having been cleared of having the virus.[324]
  10. Charli XCX was the scheduled musical act, but the rise of the COVID Omicron variant in New York City led to a limited cast and crew which meant her performances were dropped. However, she appeared in a pre-recorded sketch. She was rescheduled as a musical guest and performed in March 2022.[336][338]
  11. Bleachers substitutes for Roddy Ricch, whose scheduled musical performance was cancelled due to a COVID-19 exposure.[341]
