Loving is a 2016 British-American drama film directed and written by Jeff Nichols. It stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as Richard and Mildred Loving, the plaintiffs in the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia, which invalidated state laws prohibiting interracial marriage. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.[1][2] The film is to be released on November 4, 2016 by Focus Features.[3]

Synopsis

The film follows the courtship and marriage of Mildred Jeter, a woman of African-American and Rappahannock Native American descent, and Richard Loving, a white man. They are arrested and sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958, because their interracial marriage violates the state's anti-miscegenation laws. Exiled to Washington DC, they sue the state of Virginia in a series of proceedings leading to the Supreme Court's unanimous decision in Loving v. Virginia, which holds that laws prohibiting interracial marriage are unconstitutional.

Production

On May 8, 2015, Jeff Nichols was announced to write and direct Loving.[4] Raindog Films and The Zoo developed the film, and Big Beach would be financing the film, while producers would be Nancy Buirski, Sarah Green, Colin Firth, Ged Doherty, Marc Turtletaub, and Peter Saraf.[4] The film was inspired by Buirski's documentary The Loving Story.[5] In September 2015, Nick Kroll, Jon Bass, Marton Csokas, Bill Camp, and Michael Shannon joined the cast.[6]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on September 16, 2015 in Richmond, Virginia.[7][8][9]

Release

In February 2016, Focus Features acquired distribution rights.[10] The film had its world premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2016. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or.[1][2] Loving is scheduled to be released on November 4, 2016.[3]

Reception

Loving received favorable reviews from film critics. It holds a 93% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 29 reviews, with an average rating of 7.3/10.[11] On Metacritic, it holds an average rating of 71 out of 100 based on 12 reviews.[12]

The film was well received by critics at its Cannes screening, where it received a standing ovation.[13] The Hollywood Reporter,[14] People[15] and Essence[16] among others named it an Oscar contender. According to the New York Times, reviewers praised "Mr. Nichols's understated direction and strong performances by Mr. Edgerton and Ms. Negga."[17] Vanity Fair appreciated the film's "intimate scale", focused on the Lovings' relationship and only briefly showing the broader context of the civil rights movement, but noted that its avoidance of sappiness combined with its "terseness and sparse characterizations" made it appear somewhat lacking in heft.[18]
