Max Baer (December 24, 1947 – October 1, 2022) was the chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
Life and career
Born in Pittsburgh, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971 and a Juris Doctor from Duquesne University in 1975. From 1975 to 1979, he served as Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania. Baer was elected judge in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas and was retained for a second ten-year term in 1999. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 2003, narrowly defeating state Superior Court Judge Joan Orie Melvin.[2]
He was retained in a retention election in 2013 for a second ten year term. He ascended to chief justice in 2021 upon the retirement of Chief Justice Thomas Saylor.
Baer died on October 1, 2022, just months before hitting the mandatory retirement age of 75.[3]
