Murali Gopy (Malayalam: മുരളി ഗോപി‍) is an Indian screenwriter, actor, author, singer and journalist.[1] He wrote and acted in Ee Adutha Kaalathu and Left Right Left, which are considered path breakers in their respective genres. He has won numerous awards including Filmfare Awards South and South Indian International Movie Awards for his work on screen and behind it.

Career

Murali Gopy made his debut as an actor and screen writer in the Lal Jose movie Rasikan (2004). He also sung the song Chaanju nikkana in this movie. His second movie was Blessy's Bhramaram in which he played the role of Alex Varghese, a self-centred doctor. As an actor, Murali has been praised for his attention to minute details and realistic acting style.[2] He won the 61st Filmfare Awards South for The Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Left Right Left.

Ee Adutha Kaalathu, scripted by Murali,is considered a pathbreaker in Malayalam cinema, for its innovative method of weaving story threads together.[3][4][5][6][7] Ee Adutha Kaalathu was opined to be the cinema of 21st century by stalwart writer N. S. Madhavan.[8][9][10] His next screenplay was for Left Right Left, also directed by Arun Kumar Aravind. The basic essence of the movie is that a man is part DNA, part unknown and part what he sees and goes through as a child. It is a social thriller set in three periods – the 60s/70s, the 80s/90s and the present. The movie which opened to excellent reviews on its release, has achieved a cult status among fans and observers. [11]

Murali is also a short story writer. He published his first short story "Ayur Rekha" in Kalakaumudi in 1991 at the age of 19. His stories have been compiled together in his book Murali Gopiyude Kadhakal, published by Mathrubhumi Books.[12] He has also drawn illustrations for The Hindu, Kalakaumudi and DC Books.

As a journalist, he has worked as sub-editor and reporter for The Indian Express, sub-editor and features editor for The Hindu, chief sub-editor with Arab-Allied Media, Dubai, for the sports magazines Cleanbowled and Sports Today and as chief editor of MSN India Entertainment (India Syndicate).[13][14]

Personal life

Murali is the son of film actor Bharath Gopi and Jayalakshmy. He was married to Anjana, a bank employee, and has two children, Gauri and Gaurav. Anjana died at the age of 38, on 26 April 2015 after suffering a heart attack.[15]
