Olympiahalle is a multi-purpose arena located in Munich, Germany, part of Olympiapark.

About

The arena is used for concerts, sporting events, exhibitions or trade fairs. In the past, it served as a part-time home for the defunct ice hockey team EC Hedos München. Olympiahalle opened in 1972 and was the venue for gymnastics and handball events at the 1972 Summer Olympics.[1] The seating capacity for the arena varies from 12,150 up to 14,000.

The current seating capacity 15,500 set after a massive overhaul that was completed in 2009. A new VIP area, a restaurant and an underground second arena ("Kleine Olympiahalle") with a capacity of up to 4,000 was integrated in the new complex. The stage area was also rebuilt, which contributed to the increased seating capacity and at the same time allowed faster access for stage crews, which is very important nowadays.

Events

Olympiahalle also plays hosts to the annual Munich Sixdays, a very popular international track-cycling competition. Several other major international events were held in this venue, including the 1974 and the 1991 World Figure Skating Championships and the 1975 preliminaries of the Ice Hockey World Championships and the 1983, 1993 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships finals.[2] Important basketball events that were held in Olympiahalle include the Final phase of the 1993 European Basketball Championships, the 1989[2][3] and 1999[2][4] Euroleague Final Fours.

World Wrestling Entertainment has hosted several house shows in the Olympiahalle since 1992 and most recently on September 27, 2008. The arena played host to the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards on November 1. This was the last event before the renovation works began. Tina Turner is the solo artist with the most shows at Olympiahalle, with 23 shows. Pearl Jam were scheduled to perform during their No Code Tour on November 10, 1996, with The Fastbacks as their opening act, but the show was cancelled. Muse performed on November 12, 2012 with their The 2nd Law World Tour. Anastacia filmed her concert special Live at Last at the arena on 24 October 2004. Justin Bieber performed on March 28, 2013 with his Believe Tour. Beyoncé performed to a sold out crowd on May 22, 2013 with her The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. Backstreet Boys with their In A World Like This Tour on March 3, 2014. One Direction performed on May 17, 2013 with their Take Me Home Tour. Katy Perry performed on her Prismatic World Tour on March 2, 2015. 5 Seconds of Summer performed there on 17 May 2015 (Rock Out With Your Socks Out).
