Paya Lebar MRT Station is a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the East West Line and the Circle Line in Singapore. It is the first station in Singapore that serves both an elevated line (East West Line) and an underground line (Circle Line).

History

Paya Lebar MRT Station opened on 4 November 1989, serving the East West Line. On 17 April 2010, the Circle Line platforms opened,[1] shortening the travelling time from the station to Bishan where commuters can transfer to the North South Line, to 13 minutes.

Location

Despite its name, Paya Lebar MRT Station is not located near the district of Paya Lebar. Instead, the station actually serves the sub-zone of Geylang East, which is a part of the district of Geylang.[2] This confusion has also led to the misnaming of several nearby buildings and establishments close to the proximity of the station, such as Paya Lebar Square for example. Also located close to the station is the headquarters of Singapore Post.

Platform screen doors

As with most of the above-ground stations along the East West Line, the station was built without platform screen doors. Installation of half-height platform screen doors which prevent commuters from falling onto the train tracks started on 28 October 2010 and commenced operations on 11 January 2011 with Bedok.[3]

The Circle Line side of this station has been equipped with full-height platform screen doors since the operations started on 17 April 2010. It is the first ever underground MRT station with double-island platforms.

High volume, low speed (HVLS) fans

The station was installed with Rite Hite Revolution High Volume, Low Speed (HVLS) fans, which have been in operation since 14 July 2012 together with Kembangan.

Station layout

There are two links between the elevated East West Line station and the underground Circle Line station. The first link consists of a series of escalators to the Circle Line concourse from the western side of the East West platform. The second link, which is barrier-free, was built on the former area of Exit A which has been closed since late 2007 for reconstruction.
