Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and the central city of the Metro Detroit area. A major port city on the Detroit River, it is most well known for its manufacturing of automobiles. It is just across the river from Windsor, Ontario.
Detroit was founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac as a fort, and its original name was Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit. The name was later shortened to Detroit during the French and Indian War. After the United States became a nation and Michigan Territory was established, Detroit became the capital of Michigan from 1805 to 1847. During the War of 1812, Detroit fell to the British in the Siege of Detroit, only to be returned after the war ended. Almost a century after this, the automobile industry expanded around Detroit, making it the automobile capital of the world.
Detroit is known for its skyscrapers, the tallest of which are the central tower of the Renaissance Center, One Detroit Center, and the Penobscot Building in the Detroit Financial District. It is also known for its architecture and National Historic Landmarks such as Cadillac Place, the Fisher Building, the Fox Theatre and the Guardian Building. The city is a renowned arts and entertainment center featuring the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Symphony Orchestra based at Orchestra Hall, and theatre in Detroit. Detroit is the largest city and metropolitan region in the United States to offer casino resorts which include Greektown Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and Motor City Casino. Professional sports, the Detroit Tigers - Major League Baseball, Detroit Lions - National Football League, Detroit Pistons - National Basketball Association, and the Detroit Red Wings - National Hockey League have brought it a reputation as a 'city of champions'.

Dearborn is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in the Detroit metropolitan area and Wayne County, and is the tenth largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 97,775. The city is the hometown of Henry Ford and the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company. It has a campus of the University of Michigan as well as Henry Ford Community College.

Livonia is a city in the northwest part of Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. Livonia is a very large suburb with an array of traditional neighborhoods connected to the metropolitan area by freeways. The population was 100,545 at the 2000 census. The municipality is a part of the Detroit metropolitan area, and located approximately 22 miles (35 km) northwest from downtown Detroit, and two miles (3 km) from the western city limits of Detroit (Redford Township lies in between the two).

Troy is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a suburb of Detroit. The population was 80,959 at the 2000 census, making it the 12th-largest city in Michigan by population, and the second-largest city in Oakland County after Farmington Hills. Troy has become a business and shopping destination in the Metro Detroit area, with numerous office centers and the upscale Somerset Collection mall.

Warren is a city in Macomb County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 138,247, making Warren the largest city in Macomb County, the third most populous city in Michigan, and Metro Detroit's largest suburb.

Grosse Pointe refers to an area of Metro Detroit, Michigan, United States that comprises five upscale adjacent individual communities. From southwest to northeast, they are Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Shores (incorporated in 2009 from the remnants of two townships, Grosse Pointe Township in Wayne County and Lake Township in Macomb County), Grosse Pointe Woods.
The terms "Grosse Pointe" or "the Pointes" are ordinarily used to refer to the entire area, referencing all five upscale individual communities, with a total population of about 50,000. The Grosse Pointes altogether are about twelve square miles, bordered by Detroit on the south and west, Lake St. Clair on the east and south, Harper Woods on the west of some portions, and St. Clair Shores on the north. The cities are in eastern Wayne County. The Pointes begin six miles northeast of downtown Detroit and extend several miles northeastward, in a narrow swath of land, to the edge of Wayne County.

Ecorse is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan, named for the Ecorse River. The population was 11,229 at the 2000 census. Its population is very diverse demographicwise, with many different races. Its neighboring cities are Lincoln Park, Wyandotte, and Detroit.
