Power Rangers (announced as Saban's Power Rangers)[3] is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Dean Israelite, based on the TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It is the third theatrical Power Rangers film, and the first since Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie in 1997. The film is currently scheduled to be released on March 24, 2017. The film stars Dacre Montgomery, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler and Elizabeth Banks.

Synopsis

Five ordinary high school kids Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini and Jason must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat led by Rita Repulsa. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.[4]

Development

The project was announced in May of 2014 as a collaberation between production Saban and Lionsgate.[11] Roberto Orci was originally attached to produce and Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were hired to write the script for the film.[12] Orci would eventually leave the project to work on Star Trek Beyond.[13] On April 10, 2015, The Wrap reported that Dean Israelite is in negotiations to direct the film.[14] Israelite told IGN in an interview that the film will be a completely playful, and it needs to be really fun and funny. But like Project Almanac, it's going to feel very grounded at the same time, and very contemporary and have a real edge to it, and a real gut to it, it's going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things.[15] In July 2015, it was announced that Brian Casentini, Marty Bowen, and Wyck Godfrey would serve as producers for the film.[16][17] Brian Tyler was brought on as composer of the film.[18]

Casting

Actors began testing for the roles of the five rangers on October 2, 2015.[19] On October 7, 2015, Naomi Scott was cast as Kimberly.[8] Newcomers Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin and RJ Cyler were then cast as Jason, Zack and Billy, respectively[5][9][7] At the end of the month, Becky G was chosen to play Trini.[6] On October 30, 2015, Saban confirmed that the five rangers would have the same first names as those on the 1993 television season.[20] When it came to casting the rangers, director Dean Israelite said, "From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process", and that while the races of the characters were switched around, he added that, "we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”[21] On February 2, 2016, it was announced that Elizabeth Banks would portray Rita Repulsa in the film.[1]

Filming

Filming was originally set to begin on January 18, 2016,[22] but was rescheduled and began on February 29 in Vancouver.[23][4] On May 28, 2016, filming was complete.[24][25]

Marketing

On March 3, 2016, Lionsgate released the first official photo of the five rangers.[21] The following month, the company released the first official photo of Banks as Rita Repulsa.[1] On May 5, 2016, Lionsgate debuted the first official look at suits that the rangers wear in the film. Regarding the new suits, director Dean Israelite stated, "The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis, these suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit", while production designer Andrew Menzies stated that the new suits are "an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans."[26]

Release

The film was originally scheduled for release on July 22, 2016,[27] but Lionsgate later delayed the release date until March 24, 2017.[28]

Potential Sequels

Lionsgate announces that they may make "5-7" more Power Rangers films.[29][30]
