Pynes House is a 21,000 square feet (2,000 m2) Grade II* listed four-storey country house in Upton Pyne, Devon, northwest of Exeter.[1][2] It is situated upon a manor owned by the Pyne family since the time of Henry I.[3] It has 10 bedrooms, 10 attic rooms and 6 reception rooms and is set in grounds of 37 acres.
Constructed around 1700, it is of Queen Anne style architecture. An 1851 enlargement was followed by a ceremonial entrance hall addition in 1852 by the architect Ambrose Poynter under the command of Sir Stafford Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh, the grandson of Sir Stafford Henry Northcote, 7th Baronet who had occupied the house in the 1790s.[4] An 1827 account said "Pynes House contains some valuable pictures, particularly a fine Van Dyke, in the eating-room, and several excellent family portraits." [5]
The second Earl, Walter Stafford Northcote claimed that Pynes House, his home, was the inspiration for Barton Park, a house that appears in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.[6] This possible association has been perpetuated since.[7]
