Raj Nagar (Bengali: রাজনগর) is an Upazila of Moulvibazar District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. Bangladesh (Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found.) with approximately 29,305 houses, this district has an area of approximately 338.15 km². There are three well known rivers: the Kushiara, the Manu and the Dholai which flow across the Upazila border side of Rajnagar: the Kushiara by the North, the Manu mostly across the southern three unions, (Kamarchak, Tengrabazar and Mansurnager) and the Dholai across Kamarchak and southern border.
Demographics
As of the 2011 Bangladesh Census, Rajnagar was found to have a population of approximately 232,666, with the male population at 113,149, and the female at 119,517. In total, there are 180,566 Muslims, 51,867 Hindus, 4 Buddhists,133 Christians, and 92 of other religions. This Upazila's 18+ population is about 100,000. Rajnagar has an average literacy rate of 48.6% (7+ years), and the national average of 42.4% literate.[1]
Administration
Rajnagar has 8 Unions- 1.Fatehpur, 2. Uttarbhag, 3. Munshibazar, 4.Panch goan 5.Rajnager, 6.Tengrabazar,7. Kamarchak and 8. Monsurnager .149 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 255 villages. Rajnagar is a beautiful place where many tea gardens and historical places reside. The natural beauties of the tea gardens has made Rajnagar one of the most attractive places in Bangladesh. The first Upazila Chairman Freedom Fighter Rana Choudhury is the founder (Actual founder Principal Abdul Ahad Choudhury who founded the College in 1982) of Rajnagar Degree College, Major General Abdu Rab is the Co-founder of that college. Present Upazila Chairman is Freedom Fighter Md. Askir Khan of Rulling Party Awamileague. For the last two terms Md. Misbahuduzza (Velai) of Awamileague was the Upazila Chairman of Rajnagar. Munshibazar is one of the most important commercial unions in this Upazila where all types of goods and services are found. Trade and Business of this area are growing day by day. The Tea Garden produce plenty of different types of tea and fruits as well. List of some reputed person of Munshibazar are given below. 1. Eng. KAMARCHAK UNION : The Kamarchak Union is the most famous one of the eight unions where many reputed (progressive) people (professional and political) were born here and still are based. This Union consists of 44 villis Union and earn a lot of foreign exchange by working with different countries across the world. In 1971, during the freedom fighting, Kamarchak was one of the most advantageous places for freedom fighters. Fighters Kazi Jafor Ahmed, ex-Prime Minister of the Jatiya Party government, fought from here. This union is almost surrounded by two rivers - the Manu to the north and the Dholai across (and criss-crossed by two more small river-Udna and Palki) and to the south and the west. Very often, this union becomes affected by floods but produces plenty of Paddy, Sugarcane and vegetables. River erosion, flood, communication and a low rate of modern literacy are the four main problems. The "Vishnu Pod" (Foot Sign of God Vishnu) Dham, one of the sacred place of the Hindus is situated half a kilometer east of Tarapasha Bazar. Tarapasha High School (at present a high school and college) is one of the very old educational institutions of Rajnagar founded in 1932, on the donated estate of Nag family. The founding Headmaster of this school was Md. Rezawar Khan (deceased). Later, as an assistant teacher, he thought at this school about 64 years with most honor and reputation.
