Reform Club (Chile)
The Reform Club (Spanish: Club de la Reforma) was a group of progressive liberal intellectuals, formed in 1848, in Santiago de Chile, with the intention of bringing together the ideals opposing the government of Manuel Bulnes.[1]
History
The Reform Club was officially organized on October 29, 1849 and brought together, among its members, pipiolos and opponents of the Pelucón government of Manuel Bulnes.
The Club was the first form of modern political sociability, although it was never able to define a plan of action for the modernization of politics. One of its main founders was the liberal leader Salvador Sanfuentes and the future Presidents of Chile, Don Federico Errázuriz Zañartu and Domingo Santa María.
The Reform Club would have new versions in the future, always aimed at achieving the opening of the Chilean political system and the incorporation of the citizenry into the decision-making process, achieving some of its objectives with the constitutional reforms approved in 1874.
