Robin Singh (born Robindra Singh, 14 September 1963) is a former International cricketer who played as an all-rounder first for Trinidad and Tobago and then for India . He is one of the few cricketers in the world to have represented two countries internationally. He is currently retired and coach of Indian Premier League franchise the Mumbai Indians since 2010 and Barbados in the Caribbean Premier League from the inaugural year. He also coached the Deccan Chargers in the IPL's inaugural Year.[1] He was known in his playing days for his agility and fitness. his brilliant running between the wickets and his ability to hit sixes combined with superb fielding skills which made him an integral part of the Indian team for almost 5 years. The Indian Team line up then boasted of Indian Greats like Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid, Azharuddin, Jadeja, Kumble and Srinath.[2][3][4]


Robin Singh moved to India in 1984 and studied at the madras university during which he played club level And college level cricket. After making the state team, he played only for one state Tamil Nadu till his retirement from all forms of cricket. In 1988 Tamil Nadu won the prestigious Ranji trophy title after a gap of 33 years. Robin not only played a vital Part in the entire tournament but also walked away with the man of the match trophy in the Finals. He later captained the state and South Zone teams with success.

He surrendered his Trinidad passport to be a naturalised Indian so he could represent India.

Early life

Robin Singh was born in Princestown,Trinidad to Ramnarine and Savitri Singh of Indian descent who are part of the Indian Diaspora in the West Indies created by migration for employment during British colonisation.[5] He moved to India when he was 19 to study and played his early cricket in Madras.Robin has a master's degree in Economics from the University of Madras. He currently resides in Adyar, Chennai, although his parental family and siblings still live in Trinidad.[6]

Playing career

In West Indies Robin captained the Trinidad youth team in regional tournaments in 82-83. He represented the senior Trinidad team in two one day matches in 1983. During which time he played alongside Phil Simmons, David Williams,Larry Gomes, Gus Logie, Ranjie Nannan, sheldon Gomes, Richard Gabriel to name a few.

First Class Career

Robin Singh started his first class career for Tamil Nadu during the 1985-86 season. He was a genuine all rounder for his club and made more than 6,000 runs and also took 172 wickets with his gentle medium fast bowling during a first class career that spanned more than two decades.

International career

Robin Singh made his debut for India in One Day Internationals against West Indies on 11 March 1989, he played just 2 odis coming in to bat at number 7 both times in futile situations. However, he was dropped after the series and never got a look in for 7 long years during which he continued to perform superbly in domestic and overseas leagues. Singh had to wait another seven years to secure a regular place in the Indian team. On the back of consistent performances in domestic cricket Singh was recalled for the Titan Cup tournament in 1996. He remained a regular in the ODIs till 2001. Singh was known for his middle-lower order batting and medium-pace bowling as well as his ground fielding skills. He was noted for his batting in the closing overs (usually along with Ajay Jadeja) which made him an integral part of the side that competed in the 1999 Cricket World Cup.[7] During his playing days, he was regarded as one of the out standing fielders of the Indian cricket team. Throughout his career, Singh was considered a better fit for One Day matches and he played just one test match for his country.

Coaching career

Robin Singh first moved into coaching when he took up the job Of India under 19 Coach to England soon after announcing his retirement. Soon after he got the opportunity of coaching the Hong Kong national cricket team in 2004.[8] He helped Hong Kong qualify for the 2004 Asia Cup. In 2006 Robin Singh was appointed the coach of India A cricket team, where he coached cricketers like Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa, a number of cricketers coached by Singh moved on to play for the national team.[9] Singh was named the fielding coach of the Indian national team in 2007 and in 2008 he was also appointed the first head coach of Deccan Chargers franchise in the Indian Premier League.[10] Singh remained the fielding coach for the Indian team until October 2009 and is currently coach of the Mumbai Indians of the IPL.Ever since his involvement with Mumbai Indians in 2010 they have consistently made top four every year and become the Team to beat. He has seen them through to the runners up position during the 2010 IPL season and winners of 2013 IPL season as well as the Winners of 2013 Champions League Twenty20 and 2011 Champions League Twenty20. Mumbai Indians are the current trophy holders after having won again in 2015.He coached the Khulna team in the Bangladesh premier league where he was instrumental in discovering West Indian Dwayne Smiths and Andre Russell's skills. He was coach in Sri lankas only premier league tournament in 2012 for the team Uva and won the tournament. He has been the coach of the Barbados Tridents, arguably the most consistent team in the Caribbean premier league for the last 3 years with Kieron Pollard as captain. They have reached the finals twice and won once and made semis once. Singh also was involved with USA cricket with both the senior and junior team . In 2011, Singh coached the United States women's cricket team at the World Cup Qualifier Tournament in Bangladesh.[11]

Pakistan Super League

Robin Singh Will Coach One Of The Five Franchises In inaugural edition of the Pakistani league From 4 Feb to 24 Feb 2015.
