Sport Lisboa e Benfica created a swimming section in 1916, which had one of the most successful teams in Portugal. Benfica's most famous swimmer was Alexandre Yokochi who competed for Benfica in his entire career. He was part of the Benfica's swimming team who won the EEC European Champions Clubs Cup in 1990.[1]
Apart from the individual titles and the ECC European Champions Clubs Cup, Benfica has won the Absolute National Championship 4 times, the Women's National Championship 2 times and the Men's National Championship 8 times.[2]
Arguably, the most successful years in the swimming section was in the early 1990s, when the men's team won 6 national titles in 8 seasons.[3] The department competes in both class's, in the second division.
