Shahpur is a city and a notified area in Bhojpur district in the Indian state of Bihar.

Geography

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Shahpur had a population of 14,456. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Shahpur has an average literacy rate of 47%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 58%, and female literacy is 34%. In Shahpur, 19% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Shahpur assembly constituency covers Shahpur community development block; and Ishwarpura, Sarna, Suhinya, Barishwan,Chamarpur,Govindpur Tola, Belwati, Maharja, Kundeshar, Karisath, Semariya,hariharpur, sonbarasa, Beheya,chaurasta, Itawa,Bharauli, Gopalpur, Ranisagar, Karnamepur, Ramdthi, Banahi, Baghi, Diha,gaura, Sikariya, Maniyara,dhamwal and Kauria .[3]

This town is alternatively spelled as Shahpurpatti. The town comes between Ara and Buxer Main Road highway.

Centers for attraction

This city is known as "Town Of Temples". "Mahavira Sthan", "Kundeswar Dham" "kudwa shiv at bilouti"are some of the major temples. It is considered to be very holy for Hindus and the temple compound hosts a number of fairs.

The language of almost all people in Shahpur and the rest of Bhojpur district is Bhojpuri. only 3 km west from shahpur one historical village named RANISAGAR is situated there we can se old Big mosque which is called Badi masjid,near badi masjid there is a large pond approximately cover 52 Bigha of land. It is famous that it made by any Nawab of Murshidabad. He came and built this mosque and pond and he left some of his companions to reside at Ranisagar. That time Nawab said that when he came he found some house of SAYYED cast over here. And also a religious tree RITHTHI where a great islamic saint Hazrat Maqsood DADA was doing ebadat.

Culture

People of Shahpur/ Ranisagar continues to follow a set of traditions. The place has people from all the major religions of India including Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians. The famous sweets of Shahpur are jaggery sweets, Belgrami,lakhtho, Jhrua (Ka Mithai), Jalebi and puri and liti Choka which are available in the main market of Shahpur. Most of the male adults wear dhoti-kurta,pajama,lungi and ladies wears sarees. The nearest railway station is Banahi Station.
