Star (known as Southern Star until 2015) is New Zealand Christian evangelical radio network, which plays contemporary Christian music, hymns and Biblical teachings. It is owned and operated by Rhema Media, which describes its playlist as "a smooth and easy blend of music from people you know and trust", including modern hymns, easy listening tracks and instrumentals.[1] Radio educator Peter Hoar has described its programmes as "a bit of smooth talking about the Bible, Christian living and God in general" with a firm believe in the infallibility of the Bible.[2]
The station's breakfast programme is hosted by founding staff member Cathy Jenke. Peter Shaw hosts mornings, Dudley Scantlebury covers afternoons, Aaron Ironside hosts the Drive show and Ross Browne presents the night programme. Rosemary Jane presnts the mid-dawn programme from midnight to 6am. Previous hosts include Rachel Thomas, Brian Ferguson, Glen Stephenson, UCB staff James Totton, Katikati His FM manager Rob Holding, Andrew Urquhart and Diane Campbell. Contributors include landscape designer and gardening expert Debbie Olsen, who previously hosted a gardening show on sister station Rhema.[3]
Star was set up through a lease on spare programming time when Radio New Zealand's AM Network is not broadcasting sittings of the New Zealand Parliament. The AM Network is operated by Radio New Zealand under a contract, and uses a nationwide set of AM broadcasting transmitters that were previously used by The Concert Programme before it switched to FM broadcasting. In total, Radio New Zealand produces an estimated 17 hours of live Parliamentary broadcasting and just over an hour of packaged extracts.[4] The AM Network's closedown hours were originally used by Sports Roundup.[5] Despite AM Network being technically owned by Radio New Zealand, Star broadcasts Newstalk ZB Affiliates Unit hourly news bulletins during the air time it leases.[6]
A 24-hour version of the station also broadcasts on FM frequencies in minor centres.[1]
