History

In 2012, The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) created the cricket tournament Bangladesh Premier League based on the Twenty20 form of the game. For the inaugural tournament held in February of the same year, a list of six teams who will be participating in the tournament was finalised. The teams representing two different divisions of Bangladesh, including Sylhet, were put up on auction in Radisson Hotels on 19 January. Sylhet Royals was bought by Walton Group for a price of USD 1.06 million (BDT 88,722,000)

2012 season

Alok Kapali was the icon player for Sylhet Royals. The team was led by Englishman Peter Trego. The team bought star players including batsmen Imrul Kayes, Scott Styris, Kamran Akmal. They had world class bowlers of the likes of Sohail Tanvir, Brad Hogg, Rubel Hossain. The most expensive player, Sohail Tanvir, was bought for $100,000.

The Sylhet Royals started off their campaign with a strong total with half centuries from captain Peter Trego and icon player Alok Kapali. However they were ill prepared for the impressive force of Chris Gayle who opened the tournament with a century. From then Sylhet failed to break into a winning rhythm. Their efforts against the Gladiators were poor as they were bowled out within their overs. After two consecutive loses they then came to tight lose against Khulna whom they lost against by two runs chasing a big target.
