Tie goes to the runner
"Tie goes to the runner" is advice or an informal rule used in sandlot baseball. It refers to situations in which a runner is forced to proceed to a base and arrives there apparently simultaneously with the ball that has been thrown to the fielder covering that base. The advice says that if it is not apparent whether the runner or the ball arrived first (a tie), the call should go in favor of the runner (safe at the base).[1]
This advice has no application in organized baseball; instead, the umpire must make a determination that one or the other arrived first, and rule the runner safe or out accordingly.
