The Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF; Romanian: Festivalul internațional de film Transilvania) is the first international feature film festival in Romania, which is held annually in the historic capital of Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca. Founded in 2002 by the Romanian Film Promotion (Romanian: Asociația pentru Promovarea Filmului Românesc), TIFF has grown rapidly to become the most important film-related event in Romania. It is a member of the Alliance of Central and Eastern European Film Festivals (CentEast)[1] and it is supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme. In February 2011, TIFF has been accredited by the FIAPF as a "competitive festival specialised on first and second feature films".[2] Indiewire listed it as one of the world's top 50 leading film festivals.[3]

The festival takes place in three theaters around the city, Republica, Arta and Victoria, and since 2004 were introduced outdoor screenings, in the courtyard of Babeș-Bolyai University. In 2007 the festival was held in two cities: Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu, to honor the year when Sibiu was declared European Capital of Culture.

History

Till 2009 which saw the first edition of Comedy Cluj, TIFF was the only film festival in Romania for international features.[4] The 2009 edition saw a lifetime achievement award for Claudia Cardinale and Florin Piersic.

Up to 43% of the annual budget for culture of the city of Cluj-Napoca is spent on the festival.[5] TIFF organises movie projections in partnership with other Romanian festivals, such as the Peninsula/Félsziget Festival. In 2015, TIFF attracted more than 110,000 attendees.[6]
