Trust (often stylised as TR/ST) is a Canadian synthpop music group from Toronto, formed 2010. The band is signed to the Arts & Crafts record label. Their full-length debut album, TRST, was released on 28 February 2012.

History

Origin

The band was formed by Robert Alfons[1] (of Winnipeg) and Maya Postepski[1] (also of the band Austra). The pair met in late 2009, started writing songs together,[2] and formed the band in January 2010.[3] The duo insist that they are more than just an Austra side project.[4]

TRST

The band released their single "Candy Walls" in 2011 on Brooklyn imprint Sacred Bones Records.[5] On the strength of this seven-inch release, they were signed in 2011 to record label Arts & Crafts.[6]

They released their first full length album TRST 28 February 2012 on the Arts & Crafts label.[7]

Critic Luis-Enrique Arrazola of the National Post said (of their Toronto release party), "Trust gave an outstanding performance proving that they're an act worthy of all the hype. With a set far past midnight, they're the perfect ending to a wild night in the city, taking you on a relentless trip through a set list dripping with sexual tension before winding down to the last pulses of the synthesizer."[8]

Larry Fitzmaurice of Pitchfork Media rated the album 7.4 out of 10 saying "...I quite like Alfons' voice; it has a slithering, grimy quality to it that increases the raunch-factor on particularly dirty-sounding tracks like "Shoom" and "Bulbform", and when he struts his stuff on "Sulk" and "Dressed for Space", he sounds like the kind of personality-heavy singer indie culture's been hesitant to embrace over the last few years."[9] It was listed at number eight on Insound's Top Albums of 2012[10] and at number thirty-seven on Under the Radar's Top 50 Albums of 2012.[11]

After the TRST tour Postepski left to focus on Austra.[12][13]

Joyland

Joyland was released March 2014. The album received generally favorable reviews and debuted at No. 12 of Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[14]
