Umkumiut[1] is a small unincorporated community on Nelson Island in the bay, 3 miles (4.8 km) from Toksook Bay. It is located in the Bethel Census Area.

History

This region was inhabited by the Yupik Eskimos for thousands of years. During the 1950s it was founded as a community. It was later annexed by Toksook bay and is now a neighborhood of Toksook bay Alaska. Long ago Umkumiut is where some people lived for the summer.

Population

Estimated around 100 it is no longer possible to get an accurate count of the population because this community is now a neighborhood of Toksook bay. and the Census Bureau normally does not do a census for individual neighborhoods. During the summer some people go out to that village and camp, they go to Toksook bay to get food and gas. When they are done gathering food they go back to their home.
