Verderio is a comune in the province of Lecco, in Lombardy, that will be formed on 25 May 2014 from fusion of comuni Verderio Superiore and Verderio inferiore.[1]

After two referendum gave negative results in 1994 and 2004, citizen were called to vote to create this comune on 1 December 2013. The referendum was passed with 80% yes and 20% no votes.

Formerly, The 'upper' and 'lower' Verderio were divided in two Comune from the preexisting Verderio in 1905.

The name 'Verderio' is believed to come from latinum "Viridarium", Garden. Traces of Roman civilizations were found - including remains if the defensive walls - and other towns in the area : castrum di Vicus Mercati (now Vimercate), the winter encampment Hiberna Regis (now Bernareggio), Caesarea Novella (Now Sernovella, frazione di Verderio) and Miliarium Tertium (Terzuolo, frazione in Robbiate).
