WUPM (106.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Ironwood, Michigan, USA, broadcasting a hot adult contemporary music format. The station began broadcasting in 1978 and has featured a contemporary music format throughout its history. A tragic storm hit the WUPM tower on April 1, 2015, crashing the structure to the ground. The transmitter building was not damaged, and no one was hurt. After the storm, WUPM returned to the airwaves under special authorization from the FCC utilizing a temporary transmitting site at reduced power. As of June 23, 2015, WUPM is broadcasting off of a temporary tower located at their Anvil hill transmitting site (the site of the downed tower). Temporarily, the tower has a single antenna bay with an ERP of around 250 watts. As this tower sight is at a much higher elevation than the temporary site in Ironwood, WUPM 106.9 can be heard for greater distances. The fringe signal has been reported to travel as far as 55 miles. The staff of WUPM have stated that they hope to have a new tower erected at the Anvil hill site by early this winter bringing 106.9FM back up to its full power.
