Zenobia Shroff (born May 27, 1965)[1] is an Indian-American actress, appearing in film, theater and television. Shroff is known for her breakthrough role in 2017's The Big Sick,[2] and she stars as Muneeba Khan, the title character's mother, in the Disney+ TV series Ms. Marvel.[3][4]

Early life

Shroff grew up in South Bombay,[4][1] in what is now known as Mumbai. Shroff left India in her early twenties to pursue acting at New York City’s Circle in the Square Theatre School.[1][5]

Career

Shroff's one-woman show, "How to Succeed as an Ethnically Ambiguous Actor," was nominated for best actor and best director at the Planet Connections Festival awards.[6]

Shroff acted in Indian films, including the 2008 film Little Zizou, which won Best Film on Family Welfare at the 56th National Film Awards. In 2017, she portrayed Kumail's mother in the American film The Big Sick. She and her co-stars shared a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.[7]

In 2018 and 2019, she had recurring roles on The Resident on Fox and Showtime’s The Affair.[8] She also provides one of the voices of Counselor Jerry in the animated film Soul.[9]

Shroff plays Muneeba Khan, the mother of the title character, in the 2022 Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.

Personal life

Shroff has a master's degree in psychology. She has also spent time teaching acting and movement to disadvantaged children in the New York City area.[10] She is a member of the Parsi community.[1]
