The 2015–16 season is Rangers' second consecutive season in the Scottish Championship and their 135th season of competitive football. Rangers will compete for the Scottish Championship, Scottish Challenge Cup, Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup.

Month-by-month review

June

On 1 June the contracts of Lee McCulloch, Kris Boyd, Steve Simonsen, Lee Robinson, Bilel Mohsni, Sébastien Faure, Richard Foster, Steven Smith, Kyle Hutton, Jon Daly and Ian Black expired and the players left the club.[1] The loans of Haris Vučkić, Shane Ferguson, Remie Streete, Kevin Mbabu and Gaël Bigirimana from Newcastle United also expired.

On 5 June the club released youth players Kristian Gibson, Jamie Burrows, Junior Ogen, Lewis McMinn and Scot Whiteside.[2]

On 6 June former Rangers defender Colin Jackson died aged 68 after losing his battle with leukaemia.[3]

On 11 June Rangers Away Kit for the season went on sale.[4]

On 12 June Rangers hosted an Extraordinary general meeting.[5]

On 15 June Mark Warburton was appointed as the new Manager of Rangers. David Weir also re-joined the club as Assistant Manager.[6]

On 16 June Stewart Robertson was appointed as Managing Director of Rangers. Current Head of Football Administration, Andrew Dickson, was appointed as Director of Finance and Administration.[7]

On 17 June the club announced their Under 20's pre-season schedule, with the young players taking on Dumbarton, Tynecastle, Arbroath, Ballymena United in a testimonial for Ballymena United goalkeeper Dwayne Nelson, Coleraine and Annan Athletic. The club also announced their Under 17's pre-season schedule where they would take on Ayr United, St Johnstone, Hibernian, Heart of Midlothian, Partick Thistle, competing in the Milk Cup tournament, Queen of the South and then competing in a tournament in Liverpool.[8]

On 23 June Danny Wilson signed a three-year deal to join Rangers. Wilson became become Mark Warburton's first signing as Rangers manager, with the defender returning to Ibrox after leaving Heart of Midlothian as a free agent.[9]

On that same day Rob Kiernan signed a two-year deal to join Rangers.[10]

On 27 June the first-team squad reported back to Murray Park for day one of pre-season training.[11]

On 29 June Rangers were drawn against Hibernian away at Easter Road in the First Round of the Scottish Challenge Cup. The tie is due to be played on Saturday 25 July. This will be the first competitive game of the season and Manager Mark Warburton's first competitive match in charge of Rangers.[12]

On 30 June Rangers announced a pre-season friendly against Burnley at Ibrox Stadium which was played on Tuesday, 21 July.[13]

On the same day Rangers confirmed the signings of Jordan Gibson and Tom Lang and that both had joined the Rangers Academy on full-time contracts.[14]

July

On 3 July goalkeeper Wes Foderingham signed a three-year deal to join Rangers.[15]

On that same day First Team Coach Gordon Durie and Head of Sports Science Jim Henry left the club.

On 6 July Rangers were drawn against Peterhead at Ibrox in Round One of the Scottish League Cup. The tie is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 1 August.[16]

On 8 July Season Tickets went on general sale.[17]

On that same day Rangers match against Peterhead was rescheduled to Sunday, 2 August due to Celtic's home match with Ross County on the same day as the original date.[18]

On 15 July Rangers launched their new Third Kit.[19]

On that same day Jordan Thompson signed a two-year deal to join the Rangers Academy.[20]

On 17 July the Rangers Development Fund (RDF) founded in 1964 with the sole purpose of providing funds for the Club, the organisation – which has raised over £120 million to date – will now be formally known as the Rangers Youth Development Company.[21]

On 18 July Andy Halliday signed a two-year deal to join Rangers with the option of a third year.[22]

On 20 July Martyn Waghorn and James Tavernier both signed three-year deals to join Rangers.[23]

On 22 July former Hearts midfielder Jason Holt signed a three-year deal to join Rangers.[24]

On 27 July Rangers were drawn away to Ayr United in the Second Round of the Scottish Challenge Cup with the tie scheduled to take place on either Tuesday, 18 or Wednesday, 19 August.[25]

On 31 July Rangers International Football Club PLC announced the appointment of Peterhouse Corporate Finance as ISDX corporate adviser.[26]

August

On 2 August Rangers announced that former defender Sammy Cox had died at the age of 91.[27]

On 3 August Rangers were drawn away to Airdrieonians at the Excelsior Stadium in the Second Round of the Scottish League Cup. The tie is scheduled to take place on either Tuesday 25 or Wednesday 26 August.[28]

On that same day Rangers International Football Club PLC announced that Non-Executive Director Douglas Park decided to step down from the Board and also the Board of The Rangers Football Club Ltd. He was replaced by his son Graeme Park to take up the positions he left on the PLC and LTD boards.[29]

On 13 August Rangers confirmed late that night the signings of 19-year-old midfielder Nathan Oduwa and 20-year-old defender Dominic Ball on season long loans from Tottenham Hotspur, subject to international clearance and becoming Mark Warburton's eighth and ninth signings of the season.[30]

On 16 August Lee Wallace was named the new Captain of Rangers.[31]

On 20 August Rangers were drawn at home to Livingston at Ibrox Stadium in the Quarter Final of the Scottish Challenge Cup. The tie is scheduled to take place on Saturday 10 October.[32]

On 24 August Rangers confirmed that Darren McGregor left the club by mutual consent.[33]

On that same day Rangers confirmed the loan signing of Gedion Zelalem until January from Arsenal.[34]

On 27 August Rangers were drawn at home to St Johnstone in the Third Round of the Scottish League Cup. The tie is scheduled to take place on either Tuesday 22 or Wednesday 23 September.[35]

On that same day Rangers confirmed that Marius Žaliūkas left the club by mutual consent.[36]

On 28 August Rangers were pleased to confirm the appointment of Scott Steedman as Head of Commercial, initially on a fixed-term contract.[37]

September

On 4 September Rangers International Football Club PLC was pleased to announce the appointment of Campbell Dallas LLP as new Company auditors.[38]

On 10 September Rangers were delighted to announce that Ally McCoist had agreed to the early termination of his contract with the Club.[39]

On 15 September Rangers celebrated an awards double with manager Mark Warburton picking up Championship Manager of the Month and James Tavernier being named Player of the Month.[40]

On 21 September Rangers Football Club confirmed that former club captain and 9 In A Row legend Richard Gough is to act as a Global Ambassador for the club.[41]

October

On 15 October Rangers Football Club announced the appointment of Frank McParland as Head of Recruitment.[42]

On 16 October Rangers announced Craig Flannigan as the new Head of Performance and Preparation.[43]

On 17 October Rangers were saddened to announce former player Johnny Hamilton passed away after a short illness at the age of 66.[44]

On 19 October Rangers legendary goalkeeper and currently the oldest living Rangers player at 92, Bobby Brown was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.[45]

Also on that day Rangers announced the appointment of Neil McIlhargey as the club’s new Head of Analysis.[46]

November

On 4 November Rangers International Football Club plc published its Annual Report for the year ending June 30, 2015.[47]

On 15 November Rangers International Football Club PLC was pleased to announce that Douglas Park decided to resume his seat back on the Board with immediate effect.[48]

On 27 November Rangers hosted their AGM at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow and at the meeting, Chairman Dave King announced the club has decided to pay the living wage to employees.[49]

December

On 1 December Rangers released the results of their AGM that was hosted on 27 November at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow.[50]

Also on that day Rangers were drawn against either Cowdenbeath or Arbroath in the Scottish Cup Fourth Round. Cowdenbeath were the team that would eventually play Rangers on 10 January.[51]

On 5 December Rangers match against Raith Rovers at Stark's Park was postponed due to weather conditions. The game was rescheduled for 2 February.[52]

On 10 December former Rangers player Arnold Peralta was killed in a shooting incident in Honduras.[53]

On 31 December Rangers signed Harry Forrester from Doncaster Rovers on an initial six-month contract for an undisclosed fee.[54]

January

On 3 January Rangers signed Polish Goalkeeper Maciej Gostomski on a six-month contract as a free agent.[55]

On 6 January Rangers signed Josh Windass and Matt Crooks on pre-contracts to join the club on 1 June on four-year deals.[56]

On 8 January Goalkeeper Liam Kelly went on loan to East Fife until the end of the season.[57]

On 11 January Midfielder Andy Murdoch went on loan to Queen of the South until the end of the season.[58]

Also on that day Rangers were drawn at home to Kilmarnock in the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup. The match will be played on 6 February.[59]

On 14 January Midfielder Tom Walsh went on loan to Dumbarton until the end of the season.[60]

On 28 January Rangers signed Midfielder Billy King from Heart of Midlothian until the end of the season.[61]

On 29 January Defender Fraser Aird went on a season long loan to Vancouver Whitecaps FC until the end of the Major League Soccer season in December.[62]

February

On 1 February Rangers signed Forward Michael O'Halloran from St Johnstone on a four and a half year deal.[63]

On 4 February Rangers Manager Mark Warburton won Scottish Championship Manager of the Month and Forward Kenny Miller won Scottish Championship Player of the Month both for January.[64]

On 8 February Rangers were drawn at home to either Dumbarton or Dundee in the Scottish Cup Quarter Final on 5 or 6 March should they beat Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup Fifth Round replay on 16 February.[65]

On 17 February Rangers Forward Ryan Hardie went on a short-term emergency loan deal lasting 28 days to Raith Rovers.[66]

On 23 February Rangers Midfielder Jordan Thompson went on a short-term emergency loan deal lasting 28 days to Airdrieonians.[67]

March

On 6 March Rangers drew Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup Semi Final which will be played at Hampden Park on 17 April.[68]

On 11 March former Rangers Goalkeeper Billy Ritchie passed away at the age of 79 after a short illness.[69]

April

On 5 April Rangers won the Scottish Championship at home to Dumbarton winning 1-0 thanks to a James Tavernier goal and therefore sealing their return to the top flight.[70]

On 10 April Rangers won the Scottish Challenge Cup after beating Peterhead 4-0 at Hampden Park.[71]

On 18 April Rangers defeated bitter rivals Celtic in a penalty shootout to progress to the Scottish Cup Final.

On 21 April Rangers duo Martyn Waghorn and club captain Lee Wallace were both nominated for PFA Championship Player of the Year.[72]

On 24 April Rangers held their annual Player of the Year awards at the Hilton Glasgow. Lee Wallace won Player of the Year and the John Greig Achievement Award, Martyn Waghorn won Players' Player of the Year and the Sam English Bowl, Barrie McKay won Young Player of the Year and James Tavernier won Goal of the Season.[73]

May

On 1 May Rangers Manager Mark Warburton won PFA Scotland Manager of the Year, Captain Lee Wallace won Scottish Championship Player of the Year and Barrie McKay won Goal of the Season at the PFA Scotland award ceremony.[74]

On 13 May Rangers confirmed that Jordan Rossiter had signed an agreement with the club to join the Light Blues in the summer from Liverpool on a four-year deal.[75]

On 18 May The Rangers Football Club Limited served notice on Rangers Retail Limited terminating the IP Licence and Rights Agreement with that company with immediate effect.[76]

On 24 May Rangers confirmed the release of three first team players, with Nicky Law, Nicky Clark and David Templeton all departing the club when their contracts expire on 31 May 2016.[77]

Also on that day, Rangers were delighted to confirm the signing of Joey Barton on a two year deal. The 33 year-old midfielder will join the club on 1 July having won the English Championship with Burnley, and been named in the league’s team of the year.[78]

On 26 May Ibrox legends Willie Henderson and Alex MacDonald joined Rangers Managing Director Stewart Robertson and supporters at the Stadium to launch Club 1872 – a new, united fan group which aims to rebuild, maintain and protect Rangers for future generations.[79]

On 27 May Rangers were drawn into the Scottish League Cup South Section Group F where they will face Motherwell, Stranraer, East Stirlingshire and Annan Athletic for the 2016/17 season. Ties will be played between 16–30 July.[80]
