Kapil Sharma is an Indian stand-up comedian, actor, TV host, producer and singer. He has hosted television comedy show Comedy Nights with Kapil for almost 3 years from June 2013 to January 2016. Now, He is hosting a comedy show on Sony Entertainment Television named 'The Kapil Sharma Show' since 23 April 2016. He first appeared in the Forbes India Celebrity list in 2013, ranking 93rd on the list. He moved up to 33rd in 2014.[1][2] He has also been awarded the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2013, in the Entertainment category.[3] He is ranked at no. 3 in the Most Admired Indian Personality List by The Economic Times in 2015.[4] Sharma has been nominated for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by PM Narendra Modi, which he has accepted.[5] A year after in September 2015 he was invited to the Rashtrapati Bhavan by the President Pranab Mukherjee to acknowledge his contribution towards Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.[6] He made his Bollywood debut with Abbas Mustan's romantic-comedy Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, which released on 25 September 2015.[7][8]

Early life

Kapil Sharma was born in Amritsar, Punjab. His father was a head constable in the Punjab Police and his mother is a housewife.[9] His father died of cancer in 2004 at Safdurjung hospital in Delhi.[10] He studied at Hindu college in Amritsar.[11]

Career

Sharma worked on the comedy show Hasde Hasande Raho on MH One, until he got his first break in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, one of the 9 reality television shows he has won. He became the winner of the show in 2007, for which he won 10 lakhs as prize money.[12]

Then he participated in Sony Entertainment Television's Comedy Circus.[13] He won a total of six seasons of Comedy Circus.[14] He has hosted dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6[15] and also hosted comedy show Chhote Miyan.[16][17] Sharma also participated in the show Ustaadon Ka Ustaad.

In 2013, Sharma launched his own show, Comedy Nights with Kapil, under his banner K9 Production on Colors.[18]

At the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year awards, Sharma was felicitated with the Indian of the Year award in the entertainment category in 2013 by Amol Palekar.[19] In the 2014 Lok Sabha Election, he was declared the Brand Ambassador by the Delhi election commission.[20]

Sharma hosted the 60th Filmfare awards 2015 along with Karan Johar as co-host.[21] He was the presenter for the fourth season of Celebrity Cricket League 2014.[22] He was featured as a guest on the opening episode of Indian television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 8 on 17 August.[23] He was also featured as a celebrity guest on The Anupam Kher Show, where he shared his emotional side for the first time.[24]

Sharma was to make his film debut with Yashraj Films, but later he opted out of it.[25] He made his Bollywood debut as lead in the movie Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, which is a romantic-comedy directed by Abbas Mustan opposite four heroines, Elli Avram, Manjari Phadnis, Simran Kaur Mundi and Sai Lokur.[8] The film was released on 25 September 2015 and became a huge success at the box-office.[7][26]

After opting out of Comedy Nights with Kapil, Kapil Sharma signed a contract with Sony TV for a new show called "The Kapil Sharma Show", which is also a comedy show. The new show is a redux version of CNWK. The Kapil Sharma Show hit television screens on 23 April 2016.[27]

Personal life

Kapil Sharma lives in Mumbai by himself as a bachelor.[10] He suffered a slipped disc while shooting a song for his debut film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon during February 2015. He tweeted that he had now rested after 8 years of working continuously without any break.[28][28]

Controversies

Sharma has been accused various times for copying stage dramas of Pakistani Comedian Umer Shareef, as the latter called Sharma an adapter and a copy cat and alleged that Sharma had copied his stage drama Bakra Qiston Pe.[29] Sharma made a similar show format Comedy Nights with Kapil. Shareef even accused Sharma of copying his Stage drama in which he had four wives and making his debut movie on that drama Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon which had similar situations to that drama.[30][31]

Social work

In July 2014, Sharma adopted a homeless dog and named him 'Zanjeer'. Zanjeer, a retired police dog from Mumbai, is a Labrador who has made appearances on CNWK and social media quite often. Sharma is also campaigning to save tortured elephants across the country.[32]

Sharma and the cast of Comedy Nights with Kapil appeared in a PETA campaign to promote adoption of homeless cats and dogs.[33]
