Karan Wahi (born 9 June 1986) is an Indian former cricketer, who turned actor, model and host. Wahi has played Under-19s national cricket for Delhi along with Indian international Cricketer Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan. After shifting to Mumbai, Wahi started his television career with the 2004 television show Remix on Star One, for which he won Indian Telly Award for GR8 Best Male Newcomer.

In addition to his acting career, Wahi participates in stage shows, has hosted several awards shows including Red Carpet events. He established himself as a TV show host. In 2013, Wahi received a nomination for the Best Anchor in Nach Baliye 5 at the Indian Television Academy Awards. In 2014, he received a nomination for the Favourite Host at the Indian Telly Awards and Indian Television Academy Awards for Nach Baliye 6.

In 2014, Wahi made his big-screen debut in a supporting role with Habib Faisal's the 2014 romantic comedy film Daawat-e-Ishq.

Currently Wahi is working in Colors TV's comedy show Comedy Nights Bachao and &TV's Kahani Hamari...Dil Dosti Deewanepan Ki.[2]

Early life and cricket career

Wahi was born on 9 June 1986[1][3][4] into a Punjabi Sikh Khatri family in Delhi.[5] He did his schooling from St. Mark's Senior Secondary Public School and completed higher education from IILM Institute, Delhi University.[6]

Wahi began his career as a cricketer. During his school days, he represented St. Mark's Senior Secondary Public School and being a top scorer at CBSE and Zonal tournaments in football and cricket. In 2003, he was selected for the national under-19 cricket team for Delhi alongside Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.[7] Later he left cricket after a major injury and enrolled himself in a marketing course for joined his father's business.[8]

In 2004, Wahi posted his pictures on social networking site and then the makers of Remix saw him and called to come in a Le Mridien hotel, Delhi for an audition to play the character, Ranveer. He got selected after audition and portrayed the lead role of Ranveer Sisodia.[9]

Career

Acting career

Wahi started his acting career with the 2004 "Rose Audio Visuals" television series Remix, where he portrayed the lead role of Ranveer Sisodia, the angry lover boy character, opposite Shweta Gulati.[10][11] The story of the show is based on the lives of 12th-grade students in an elite school for the kids of the rich and the famous, and scholarship students from poorer families.[12] His performance in the show won him Indian Telly Award for GR8 Best Male Newcomer.[13]

After a long break from fiction shows, Wahi make a comeback in fiction opposite Mugdha Chaphekar to play the lead role of Rajveer in the 2009 Colors TV's soap opera Mere Ghar Aayi Ek Nanhi Pari.[14][15] The story revolves around a family of Delhi who experience the birth of a daughter after long 18 years.[16][17]

By the following year, Wahi featured in the second season of Cinevistaas Limited productions' medical drama series Dill Mill Gayye. He portrayed alongside an ensemble cast including Sehban Azim, Shilpa Anand, Moulshree Sachdeva, Neha Jhulka.[18][19] The story revolves arounds five interns, whom entered the hospital to up the entertainment quotient. The season was aired on 22 September 2009 and telecast on Star One.[20]

Due to date issues with his new show on Star Plus, Wahi signed a contract for at least four months with Rajan Shahi to play a boy next door in romance-drama series Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, an Indian adaption of Pakistani television drama series Dhoop Kinare. He portrayed alongside Kritika Kamra and Mohnish Behl, played the supporting role of a fun-loving guy, Rohan in mid December 2011 on Sony Entertainment Television.[21][22][23]

In 2012, Wahi was chosen to play the pivotal role of Ritesh in Shontara Productions' anthology series Teri Meri Love Stories, opposite Chhavi Pandey.[24] The story about Dr. Ritesh, a pediatrician, who believes that love is the cure to all illnesses, and not medicine.[25]

After trying to pursue his career in Bollywood films, Wahi signed his first film with Habib Faisal's the 2015 romantic comedy film Daawat-e-Ishq, he was cast alongside Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur, played the supporting role of Amjad, a Hyderabadi boy.[26][27] The film produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films.[28]

Later Wahi signed to play the male lead opposite Rhea Chakraborty in the 2014 romantic drama film Babbu Ki Jawani. The film produced by Amritpal Singh Bindra, under the UTV Spotboy productions.[29][30][31] Karan is currently playing the character of Shivin Raichand in &TV's Kahani Hamari...Dil Dosti Deewanepan Ki.

Television host and presenter

In addition to his work in fiction shows, Wahi has hosted numerous Red Carpet events and television shows including Indian Telly Awards, Star Guild awards. By the year of 2012, Wahi started his career as television host, gained popularity after hosting, Wizcraft International' dance reality show Nach Baliye 5 and Nach Baliye 6 along with Gautam Rode,[32][33][34] for which he received a nomination for the Favourite Host at Star Parivaar Awards (2014).[35] He also hosted the additional series of Nach Baliye, Sriman vs Srimati along with Aishwarya Sakhuja[36][37]

In July 2012, Wahi hosted the red carpet segment – The 5th Gold Awards along with Nisha Jamwal.[38][39] An year later, he hosted Sony Entertainment Television's singing reality show Indian Idol Junior along with Mandira Bedi.[40][41][42] In 2015, he replaced Jay Bhanushali for the second season as the host of Dance India Dance Super Moms.[43][44][45]

Other work and appearances

In March 2008, Wahi participated in the talent hunt show of Sony Entertainment Television's Mr. & Ms. TV, The show hosted by Shonali Nagrani, and judged by filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and actress Sonali Bendre.[46]

In September 2011, Wahi participated in Star Plus's travel reality show Ritz Jee Le Ye Pal. He won, and received the grand prize of living their dream vacation and the teammate won a brand new Maruti Suzuki Ritz. The show produced by Spin A Tale, which have six teams and their mates on the drive on the Maruti Suzuki's Ritz. The celebrity contestants include Kinshuk Mahajan, Anupriya Kapoor, Rati Pandey, Gaurav Khanna and Pavitra Punia. The show went on-air 10 September 2011.[47][48][49]

Later on August 2012, Wahi entered as a wild card in the fifth season of BBC Productions' celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He participated along with choreographer Mohina. however he evicted on mid September 2012.[50][51][52]

In the end of January 2013, Wahi joined SAB Television's event Hum SAB Saath Hain on the special occasion of Republic Day. He represented the 'Defense Act' along with Eijaz Khan, Abhishek Avasthi that brought back the feeling of patriotism and the proud defense bodies of India, Army, Airforce and Navy.[53]

In December 2013, Wahi has also judged an event – Clean & Clear Bombay Times Fresh Face 2013, which was held in Mumbai and several talented singers, rappers, dancers, guitarists, pianists took part in the auditions.[54]

In February 2014, Wahi appeared as a guest along with Siddharth Shukla, Ravi Dubey and Sargun Mehta on Colors Television's comedy/talk show Comedy Nights with Kapil, performing in a special episode of Pinky Bua's (Upasana Singh) wedding.[55][56]

In August 2014, Wahi appeared as a guest along with Karishma Tanna, Eijaz Khan, Gurmeet Choudhary, Rashmi Desai, Shakti Mohan on Colors Television's comedy/talk show Comedy Nights with Kapil, performing in a special episode of The Independence Day. The two-hour special episode was telecast on 15 August 2015.[57]

In March 2015, Wahi participated in a reality game show India Poochega Sabse Shaana Kaun?, hosted by actor Shah Rukh Khan. The show was created by Big Synergy and produced by Siddhartha Basu.[58][59]

In September 2015, Wahi participated as a comedian along with Bharti Singh in Colors TV's comedy show Comedy Nights Bachao.[60][61]

In addition to acting, Wahi has also supported charitable organisations. In 2012, he joined the All Stars Football Club, a celebrity football club that raises fund for India's largest non-profit organisations.[62][63] In the same year, he participated in the Gold Charity Soccer Match, which raised funds to support the junior artists. This match is being organised by White Leaf Entertainment Media Pvt Ltd.[64][65][66]

In May 2013, he participated in the Gold Charity Cricket Match and played the game for the benefit of the actors in the industry.[67] In August 2014, he participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to spread awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig`s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As of 21 August, the ALS Association had received $41.8 million in donations.[68][69]

In 2013, Wahi featured at number 46 in the UK newspaper Eastern Eye "Sexiest Asian Man on the Planet".[70]
