Serafim Urechean (born 2 February 1950) is a Moldovan politician.

Education and career

Urechean was born at Larga, Briceni, in the Moldovan SSR. In 1974, he graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in Chișinău. He carried out the compulsory military service in the Soviet army, at Tolyatti (1974–1976). In 1985, he graduated from the Higher Party School of Leningrad, Russia.

He worked as an engineer at the Constructions Enterprise Briceni (1976–1978); Head of Department for Industrial and Constructions Development, Second Secretary of the District Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova in Briceni (1978–1983); Chairman of the District Executive Committee in Anenii Noi (1985–1987).

He was Chairman of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of the Republic of Moldova (1987–1994) and a Member of the Moldovan Parliament (1990–1994). Since 9 August 1994 he has been the General Mayor of Chișinău Municipality. He is Chairman of the Federation of Local and Regional Authorities of the Republic of Moldova, and Chairman of the Federation of Check of Moldova. He is married to Tatiana Marcenco and has two children.

He was the interim prime minister between February 5–17, 1999.

In 2001, he founded the Independents' Alliance of Moldova.

After the July 2009 parliamentary election, alongside Vlad Filat, Mihai Ghimpu, and Marian Lupu, Serafim Urechean singned the Alliance For European Integration in a press conference on August 8, 2009.[1]
