Season 1911–12 was the 35th Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 13th time, the Scottish Cup for the 29th time and the Scottish Qualifying Cup for the 10th time.

Overview

Dumbarton were unable to maintain a bright start to the league campaign but finished 3rd in the Second Division with 27 points, 8 behind champions Ayr United.[1] Again there was no promotion to the 'top flight' as the incumbent First Division teams retained their places in the subsequent 'election' process.

Qualification for the Scottish Cup was successful, by reaching the final of the Scottish Qualifying Cup before losing to Dunfermline Athletic. In the Scottish Cup itself however Dumbarton lost out in the first round to East Stirling.

Locally, Dumbarton decided not to enter the Dumbartonshire Cup due to an otherwise busy schedule.

During the season 8 'friendly' matches were also played, including a 'benefit' game for Herbert MacPherson whose bright career was ended by a leg break in the New Year game against Dundee Hibs. Of these matches, 6 were won, 1 drawn and 1 lost, scoring 17 goals and conceding 5.
