Season 1953–54 was the 77th Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 48th time, the Scottish Cup for the 59th time and the Scottish League Cup for the 8th time.

Overview

After three seasons of mid-table finishes, Dumbarton fell to rock-bottom 16th place, with 22 points, 23 behind champions Motherwell. As Division C (North-East) was won by Brechin City this effectively relegated Dumbarton - the first time in 50 years that the club would play league football outside the top two divisions.

In the Scottish Cup, there was another disappointing first round exit with Dumbarton losing to Stirling Albion.

Another 'bottom' finish (4th of 4) was recorded in the League Cup sectional games, with only a single win and a draw from 6 matches.

And to complete a disastrous season, Dumbarton's grip on the Stirlingshire Cup was easily released by defeat in the first round to Falkirk.

Note that as the previous Stirlingshire Cup champions, Dumbarton were drawn to meet Buckie Thistle in the semi-final of the Dewar Shield - an annual competition between the county champions of Aberdeenshire, Forfarshire, Perthshire and Stirlingshire - but in the end Dumbarton withdrew.

Finally the number of goals conceded in all games during the season was 116, the 14th time this unwanted 'century' had been broken.
